Prague Quadrennial

Client

Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ) is a renowned gathering for the global scenographic community. Every four years since 1967, this esteemed event has showcased the epitome of performance design disciplines, representing the realms of costume, stage, lighting, sound design, and theatre architecture across diverse performance genres.

Two performers in dark costumes emerge from a broken concrete stage set, one climbing through a jagged opening.

Brief

For the 2023 iteration, PQ envisioned a digital platform that would serve as a comprehensive guide, a news source during the event, and a robust community platform in the inter-event years. We identified three main challenges. First, to encapsulate the distinctive branding of the 2023 event. Second, to ensure the website's performance and security during the high-traffic event. Third, to ensure the website's transition to a post-event community platform.

Solution

For PQ's 2023 event, our solution was an elegant, high-performance digital platform. We crafted an 800-page bilingual website that epitomized Bauhaus-inspired minimalism and functionality, showcasing PQ's unique image and character, while remaining performant thanks to advanced caching techniques. Despite the website's wide variety of content, it remained secure and highly responsive. This approach also connected event news and announcements directly to the archive functions, allowing users to access event media immediately.

RESULTS

The Prague Quadrennial 2023 website marked a significant milestone for studio bauhaus as our inaugural project. A blend of neo-brutalist aesthetics and technical functionalism, the shipped platform handled significant surges in visitors around the event while maintaining its secure, responsive performance across all 800 pages. It showcases our ability to handle complex projects with intricate requirements and set a high bar for future work.
